Wandering free, to the dangers encircling us,

Together happily playing and romping in the dark delicious mud.

No worries of fear for us elephant calves

Only frolics and fun.

From the depths of the jungle

Came the haunting low rustling of branches

Announcing the imminent approach of the blood-thirsty men,

Sneaking silently through the trees seeking their prize.

Racing to join our herd we stand fearful together

United in our dread and dismay

Hoping our silence will keep us safe.

Fearful for our lives.

Alas the stillness is broken,

The loud shot pierces the air.

Elephants fall like autumn leaves

Freedom is stolen and captivity begins.
